B.Sc in Fisheries

The Bachelor of Science in Fisheries & Aquaculture degree program is a four-year degree program requiring 130 credits of study. This degree is closely tied to the Bachelor of Science, Major in Biology. Students take core courses in Biologyand are encouraged to take upper-level electives in Biology.

Importance of Fisheries education

  • Bangladesh is one of the richest countries of the world considering the availability of fisheries resources but annual fish production is still less than the demand of country people. Around 60% of animal protein is supplied by the fisheries items which are also considered as the cheapest and richest source of animal protein.
  • We get only 20% of the raw materials out of the total capacity of the prawn/shrimp processing factories. Therefore, fisheries education can play a vital role to expand the fisheries industries as well as to increase the export earnings as a sustainable basis.
  • About 1.25 crore of people (10% of the country’s total population) are directly or indirectly involved in fisheries sector for their livelihood in Bangladesh. Four out of every five rural dwellers of the country are dependent to some extent on aquatic resources. Fisheries education can assist effectively in using the aquatic resources and human resources as well.

A good number of fisheries expert is required for research, extension and development activities as follows:

Government Organizations (GOs)

DoF (Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock), Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Planning, Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI), Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) etc.

Academic Institutions

Candidates having degree can apply for the post of Instructor, Research Assistant, Biochemist, Biologist, Technicians, etc. in some conventional universities. Candidates having postgraduate degree can apply for the post of Assistant Professor in the faculty of Fisheries.
